a medieval fortress at the valley entrance

Juval Castle sits on a hill at the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley. Built in 1250, the medieval castle is the summer residence of renowned South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner. It houses one of the six Messner Mountain Museums. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the myth of the mountains and features an extensive collection of Tibetan art and masks, an adventure library and images of sacred mountains. The castle grounds also include a small animal park, a winery, an organic farm and a traditional wine tavern.
A scenic walk leads to the castle along the Tscharser or Stabener irrigation channel path. Experienced climbers can tackle the Hoachwool via ferrata opposite Messner’s castle.
