Experience the panorama like Ötzi

Standing at the summit cross and enjoying a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains – just as Ötzi did 5,300 years ago – is now possible at the new viewing platform Iceman Ötzi Peak.

The route to the platform at 3,251 metres above sea level begins in Kurzras. The glacier cable car takes you comfortably up to 3,212 metres, where the mountain station and the Glacier Hotel Grawand – the highest hotel in Europe – are located.

The steel structure, designed and built by South Tyrolean engineers and companies, can be reached safely and easily in about 10 minutes via a staircase with handrail from the mountain station.

At the top, visitors can admire the shimmering glacier of the Similaun (3,606 m), at whose foot the world’s oldest and most famous glacier mummy – Ötzi – was discovered on 19 September 1991. You can also see the Hochjochferner glacier and the watershed that forms the border between Austria and Italy: from here, water flows either towards the Black Sea or the Adriatic Sea.

The route of the transhumance is also visible from the platform – a centuries-old tradition that has been part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage since 2019.
