A cathedral in the mountains
The history of the pilgrimage church of Unser Frau, located in the village of the same name, dates back centuries. In 1304, a small 13 cm wooden statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered here. Most likely at the very spot where the impressive Marian pilgrimage church now stands – a building that evolved from a simple Gothic chapel and was later renovated in Baroque style.
The statue of Mary is still preserved in the church today and is kept in the monstrance. A church built as a monument to a statue. Situated at an altitude of 1,500 metres, the pilgrimage site of Unser Frau served for centuries as a stop for travelers crossing the Alps from Augsburg. At that time, the Schnalstal Valley was an important transit route.
