As far back as the Bronze Age, when copper smelting played a vital role, the region around Latsch at the foot of the historic Martell Valley mines emerged as a major center of human settlement – a landscape steeped in history, as vividly demonstrated by archaeological finds dating back to the era of the famous Ötzi iceman. A truly exceptional testament to this epoch is the fascinating Latsch figure menhir, which belongs to the so-called Adige Valley group, of which eleven specimens have been discovered in South Tyrol and seven in Trentino so far. These monumental stone stelae are classified into male, female, and gender-neutral representations, and they continue to captivate visitors to this day. Adorned all around with intricate engravings and originally even painted in prehistoric times, these imposing stone monuments exude a deeply mystical atmosphere, offering a compelling journey back in time to the early cultural history of the Alpine region.
