Churches, Monasteries and Chapels in Venosta Valley

Churches, cloisters and chapels in Venosta Valley

In the Vinschgau valley in South Tyrol, there are churches and monasteries of great cultural and historical significance spanning more than ten centuries. The history of these sacred buildings, with their round apses and fresco cycles, is shaped by conflicts between the Engadine League of God’s House and the Habsburgs, as well as by disputes between nobility and clergy, peasants and the bourgeoisie. Many of South Tyrol’s cultural treasures have nevertheless withstood the passage of time in the Vinschgau.
Days of Romanesque Art – 11 & 12 October 2025
Local Facets of an Artistic Era
Churches, monasteries, castles and palaces: on the “Days of Romanesque Art” on 11 and 12 October 2025, 33 cultural sites across South Tyrol and in nearby Switzerland will open their doors for free guided tours.

Immerse yourself in monastic life of the past, step into otherwise inaccessible chapels, peek behind castle walls – these and other extraordinary experiences await you during the “Days of Romanesque Art”.

On free and exclusive guided tours, you can admire the hidden beauty and historical secrets of both well-known and inconspicuous monuments and sacred buildings dating from between 950 and the mid-13th century.

This journey back to the Romanesque period leads from Val Venosta through the Burgraviato and the South Tyrolean Lowlands to the Puster Valley: to mystical places such as the castle chapel of St. Stephen in Morter, to castles like Hocheppan and Taufers Castle, and to monasteries such as St. John in Müstair (CH) and Marienberg near Burgusio. In Naturno, the Church of St. Proculus will host an engaging talk on “Uncertain Times in the Middle Ages”. Termeno boasts two gems adorned with rich fresco cycles. Also on the programme are the exhibition “Revolt! The Novacella Monastery in the Peasants’ Uprising” at Castel Sant’Angelo in Novacella and a children’s quiz in Prissiano at the Church of St. Jacob.
