Prato allo Stelvio/Prad am Stiflserjoch is known well beyond its boundaries for its customs and traditions. One of these is the cracking of the whips that skilled Goaßlschnöller in Prato practice as a fine art. In 1993, the Goaßlschnöller whip-crackers formed an association consisting of 50 active members, one of the most significant in the entire Alps and taking part in both regional and international championships.

Cracking of whips has a long tradition in South Tyrol. The whip is made of leather or wire wound around a larch branch with a red silk ribbon at the tip that, by means of a special technique, reaches a speed faster than sound, creating the cracking sound.
