In the Upper Venosta Valley, Christian and pagan traditions have been revived and re-enacted until the present, such as the Launching of the Burning Disks (Scheibenschlagen), on the mystical Tarces hill on the first Sunday of Lent. By recreating this ritual, local people celebrate love and fertility and invite spring to show its blossoming face.

But first, the demons of the cold and darkness have to be exorcised. Thus, smoking-hot wooden disks are thrown down into the valley, accompanied by cheers of good wishes and poetry. At the end of the event a multi-meter high straw-witch (symbolizing the end of winter), is burned.
