Pala Pear Highlights
Specialities made with the old variety of pear at the “Palabira” Days in Glorenza
In September, the narrow alleys of the medieval town of Glorenza/Glurns are permeated with a sweet, vanilla-like, fruity aroma. When the Pala pear, also called the “summer pharmacy pear” is ripe, the farmers fetch their extra-long ladders from the barns. The pears grow on tall, knobbly trees. Some fall to the ground before harvest, and serve as suppliers of sugar to bees. The pears must be processed quickly, ideally dried in strips for a high-energy snack in winter, but are also a must in many tasty dishes. Sample and enjoy these pears during these days in Glurns. The “Palabira” Days finish with the traditional festival in the town square on 17 September, called the “Palabirasunnta”.
