Pastures and Alpine Huts

Pastures and Alpine Huts in the Upper Venosta Valley

A Valley Characterized by Green Valleys and High Alpine Pastures

The environment in the Upper Venosta Valley is largely characterized by green valleys and high Alpine pastures. It is also the location of the the Malles heath - largest in the Alps. Further north there is the extensive lake complex situated around the Resia Lake and the lakes around St. Valentin on the heath.

Today, there are total of 83 pastures are farmed in the Venosta Valley on an area of 37,000 hectares of grazing areas and at an altitude of 2,000m. Many of the pastures also provide resting places for hikers offering their guests peace and relaxation, along with music, concerts and traditional South Tyrolean cuisine, served on spacious sun terraces. The numerous dairies in the Valley produce their own cheese, butter and milk products.

Important: many of the pastures in the Upper Venosta Valley are only open for short periods during the summer months (from mid June until the beginning of September).
