The painter Karl Plattner (1919 - 1986) , along with Johann Rufinatscha, is the most famous individual from Malles/Mals. The youngest of ten children, he initially trained as a house painter. His artistic talent was soon discovered and he went to study fresco painting in the art academy in Vienna.

Plattner's most significant works were created in Brazil, Paris, Salzburg and of course in Tyrol. These include numerous frescos and murals. His style however, scandalized conservative circles and his contemporary fresco for the monument to those killed in action of duty met with opposition in 1951.
