The cultivation of fruit and vegetables is practiced in the entire upper Venosta Valley including in the valley around Prato allo Stelvio. Thanks to the unique combination of sun, wind and dryness, these are ideal conditions for a wide variety of the highest quality fruit to be grown here (including some rare varieties, such as the ancient Pala pear). Apricots
, pears and raspberries of outstanding quality are grown in Prato allo Stelvio, as well as vegetables such as cauliflower, carrots, cabbage and potatoes.
At harvest-time there is much cause for celebration and in Cengles, there is the festival of sugar beet. During the Törggelen
weeks in autumn there are feasts of mutton, dumplings, sauerkraut and beetroot.
