The Swiss-sponsored "Stairways to Heaven"
Project follows the trail of sacred architecture of the Romanesque period. Fortresses, monasteries and ancient manor houses (the so-called residences), dating back to the Gothic and Renaissance, may be visited and admired. These include Schlandersburg Castle
, Coldrano Castle and the Castle in Laces
, the only medieval castle in the Venosta Valley surrounded by a moat. An original manuscript of the 1323 “Song of the Nibelungs” was discovered in the Obermontani Castle.
