Val Martello/Martelltal provides the living space for many animals: Chamois, deer, stags, marmots and even bearded vulture can be seen amidst the Passo Stelvio/Stilfserjoch Nature Park at the bottom of the highest mountains. With its old farms, forests and alpine pastures the valley is an ideal hiking destination. However, Val Martello/Martelltal is known as the "valley of berries" in South Tyrol. Many farmers have specialised on the cultivation of sweet fruit. The unique quality of strawberries is due to the mild and dry climate, the warm days and the cool nights. Due to the various altitudes of the cultivation areas, the strawberries mature only slowly in the sun. The result is a very special aroma. Here the strawberries are still harvested when the strawberry harvest has already finished in most areas in Europe.
