Asparagus from Val Venosta/Vinschgau

The characteristics of asparagus from Castelbello/Kastelbell

The first modern asparagus cultivation with new types and new growing techniques was introduced by Mr. Hubert Pohl from the Köfelgut farm in Castelbello/Kastelbell more than 20 years ago. 20 years are considered a long life for asparagus, and 20 years provide evidence that asparagus found an ideal place in near the Adige/Etsch River in Castelbello/Kastelbell.

The taste and the quality of asparagus are mainly determined by the soil, which changes every 100 meters in Val Venosta/Vinschgau. White asparagus love a moderate warm, Middle-European climate. Due to the early maturing process and the higher prices as a result, more and more asparagus is grown in Southern Europe and also in tropical countries. Because of the long transport route and the connected storage, asparagus from these areas is less fresh and also lacks of taste.

Meanwhile, the asparagus cultivation area in Val Venosta/Vinschgau has increased to 3 hectares, which equals a harvest of approximately 30,000 kg. Harvest occurs from the middle of April to the start of June. The quality of asparagus mainly depends on freshness. Therefore, asparagus from Castelbello/Kastelbell is mostly delivered to guesthouses and shops and to private customers on the day of harvest.

Castelbello/Kastelbell Asparagus Weeks: from the middle of April to the middle of May this unique delight spoils the palate of all gourmets. Many guesthouses, wine-growers, asparagus farmers and merchants participate. A tasty period awaits you… Furhter information: www.kastelbell-tschars.com
