With the introduction of the seal of quality, South Tyrol has become a role-model in Europe. In 1976 South Tyrol has introduced a trademark for South Tyrolean quality products in order to guarantee origin and quality of the products. The South Tyrolean seal of quality was approved by the EU in 2005. Only products with a considerably higher and more specific quality than legal standards can get the seal of quality.
The following products can obtain the South Tyrolean seal of quality:
- milk and dairy products
- bread, apple pie and "Zelten" (traditional Christmas cake)
- apples
- bacon
- wine
- vegetables
- berries, cherries
- honey
- Grappa
- apple juice
- medicinal and spice plants
