In ancient times a population of giants used to live in our gorges and valleys. One of the giants called Ortler grew so high, that he could even look over the trees. He continued to grow and was finally taller than all the mountains. At the same time his arrogance also increased and he started to mock the whole world. There was a dwarf in Stelvio/Stilfs who climbed up the giants' legs and stomach and all the way up to his head. On his head, the dwarf did a tumble and sang: "Oh giant Ortler how small you are, smaller than a dwarf like me. You grew for thousands of years and your nose nearly reaches into the sky. But what use is it to you, what use? The dwarf called Nudelhopf is bigger than you, higher than you up here upon your head".
Giant Ortler got really angry and wanted to catch the dwarf on his head and throw him down, and suddenly he felt that he had gone stiff and paralysed. Upon noticing his situation, the giant got such a fright that he froze to ice and snow.
