Nature in Val Venosta/Vinschgau is characterised by great variety everywhere you go. In the Stelvio National Park you can however admire the highlights of this variety. The park was founded in 1935 and provides a great example of peaceful coexistence of nature and the cultural landscape. The side-by-side existence of unspoiled landscape and agricultural areas, the solitude of the mountains and the populated farms provides a challenge all year long. Here you can find all types of landscapes: from the 3905 m high Ortles/Ortler Mountain to high-alpine glaciers, alpine pastures and green slopes and also valley basins.
The 133,302 hectare large Stelvio National Park, only one third of which is part of South Tyrol's territory, is not an isolated nature resort or a sterile outdoor museum. In order to introduce locals and tourists to this wonderful park, guided hikes, excursions and slide-shows are offered. Even though you won't meet a wolf or a bear in the nature park, you will still find a great variety of living animals: stag, deer, chamois, ibex, foxes, marmots and even badgers and weasel live in the park. If you keep your eyes open when hiking through the park, you might discover buzzards, sparrow hawks, owls and Golden Eagles. Experts are very proud to have successfully resettled bearded vultures in the Stelvio National Park.
