Castles in the Venosta Valley

Traces of the Middle Ages in Venosta Valley

There are 40 castles located in the Venosta Valley cultural region, a reminder of its turbulent history. One of the best preserved is the Churburg Castle in Sluderno/Schluderns, which was founded in the 13th century and subsequently - much like the nearby Coldrano Castle - converted to a richly-decorated residential chateau in Renaissance style. Castelbello/Kastelbell is a mighty fortress castle constructed above the rocks, situated on the Via Claudia Augusta. The ruins of the Lichtenberg Castle and the Rotund Castle in Tubre/Taufers, one of the highest located castles in Tyrol, are also well worth a visit.
